Nancy Kulp was a publicist, an actor, a linguist, an aspiring politician, and a teacher, among other occupations. Kulp is a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but after completing his education in Florida, he moved to Hollywood to work in the film industry’s PR department rather than as a movie actor. Soon after Kulp’s arrival in Hollywood, director George Cukor and casting director Billy Gordon persuaded her that she should be acting rather than working behind the camera. Cukor and Gordon argued that she had more to offer the public. After that, she began a successful career as a character actress in films and on television, including two memorable roles: on The Bob Cummings Show (1955) as the bird-loving “Pamela Livingstone,” and on The Beverly Hillbillies (1962) as the long-suffering, lovesick, and bird-loving “Miss Jane Hathaway.” Both of these roles were memorable for the actress. Kulp went on to pursue a career in theatre, Broadway, and television. He also dabbled in politics, making an unsuccessful run for Congress in Pennsylvania in 1984. The Hillbillies ran for a total of nine years before it was cancelled. Later on, she became an acting instructor before retiring to a farm in Connecticut and then to Palm Springs, where she passed away in 1991 from cancer complications.
