Beverly Garland was trained in the art of acting by Anita Arliss, who was the sister of the famous stage and screen star George Arliss. Beverly Garland was born in Santa Cruz, California. After moving to Arizona with her family, she began her acting career in local productions in Glendale and later Phoenix. Before making her debut in a supporting role in the feature film D.O.A.-1949, Garland worked in radio and appeared in a few risqué shorts, some of which featured her in scantily clad situations. Her husbands include the actor Richard Garland and the land developer Fillmore Crank, who built the two hotels that bear her name. Richard Garland played in a number of movies during her lifetime. Ms. Garland made guest appearances on a number of different television game shows, such as The Guardian (2001), which aired on CBS, and Weakest Link (2001), which aired on NBC. She also kept her recurring roles on 7th Heaven (1996), which aired on the WB (now the CW), and Port Charles (1997), which aired on ABC, both of which debuted in the 1990s. Ms. Garland was honoured with the awarding of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the year 1983. She had been working in the entertainment industry for half a century when the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters decided to honour her by inducting her into their Hall of Fame in the year 2001. Ms. Garland holds two very important “firsts” in the annals of television history: she played television’s first policewoman in the 1957 series Decoy, and, more importantly, the series gave her the honour of becoming the first actress to star in a television dramatic series. Both of these accomplishments were made possible by Decoy. Beverly Garland continued to run the 255-room Beverly Garland Holiday Inn in North Hollywood even after the death of her husband in 1999, with whom she had been married for 39 years (with the assistance of three of her four children). Beverly Garland passed away on December 5, 2008, in the comfort of her home in the Hollywood Hills neighbourhood of Los Angeles, California. She was 82 years old.
